Calatheas

There are over 40 different variety of Calathea, with some being far easier to care for than others. Some varieties have less of a demand for high humidity and constant temperatures. Ideal varieties to begin your Calathea journey with are Orbiflora, Rattlesnake, Wavestar and the closely related Ctenathes. On the other hand, varieties such as Pinstripe, Whitestar and the White Fusion are incredibly fussy about their environment. 

Calatheas originate from the undergrowth of Costa Rican rainforests. This means they are sensitive to very bright and intense light. The best conditions for most Calatheas is medium, indirect light. A frosted or north facing window, or being set back in a bright room are ideal choices for positioning. A common misconception is that these are 'low light' plants, when in reality they do need light coming their way.

Being rainforest plants, these love the high humidity of this environment and finding this in the home can be challenging. A kitchen or bathroom which generates steam from cooking/showering is the best choice for a Calathea. Humidity can also be increased with regular misting, a pebble tray with water underneath, or introducing a humidifier to the room. 

Calatheas enjoy a well-draining substrate that is kept consistently moist but not drenched. Ideally allowing the top inch or two of soil to dry out in between watering will keep your Calathea happy. If watering in a ceramic pot holder, check after watering that your plant is not sitting in a pool of water. Calatheas will also begin to wilt over if their soil becomes very dry but after a generous water, the plant will perk up over the next few hours.
